* * * Keehta, a Wolfdog of unknown parentage, was probably born in the Spring of 2004. We rescued her from a wildlife shelter in December 2005. In her short life, she had already had five homes (a common and sad fact of life for many wolfdogs - read why we are against the breeding and sale of wolfdogs as pets... below). Although very fearful of us at first, she soon adapted to her new home and packmates, and it sure didn't take her long to learn how to "wolf down" her food! She still never sits still for the camera, though! It's hard to take pictures of her... Keehta spent almost two years living at our Wolf Education Centre at Panorama Mountain Village, and as of November 2007, she is in her new home here in Golden, at the Northern Lights Wolf Centre. Keehta will continue helping us teach people about wolves. She is shy and gentle, playful and content. Her legs are shorter than a wolf; she is somewhat stocky and weighs about 65 lb (about 30 kg).

Our statement regarding wolfdogs / wolf hybrids: Wolfdogs make unsuitable pets and we do not endorse their breeding, nor their sale as pets. By crossing a domestic pet with a wild animal (with strong predatory instincts and hierarchy behaviour), the resulting mix of traits is unpredictable, and often tragic for the animal itself. We field dozens of calls from people who have to get rid of their wolfdog. If some of you out there are having problems with your wolfdog, PLEASE don't call us. We are not in the business of rescue, and are not interested in adopting wolfdogs. There are many resources out there - see if any of these links are helpful to you. If you are considering purchasing a wolfdog as a pet... DON'T. Before you make any decisions, consider volunteering at a wolfdog rescue centre, joining a wolfdog discussion group, and get in touch with a trainer who has experience with and a solid understanding of the unique characteristics of wolfdogs.
